Course Aim

The course will be formally assessed by Exam on day four which is pass or fail and a post course assignment.  The content is aligned to National Occupational Standards (NOS) EPRR Minimum Standards

For many the course will act as an introduction to the National Ambulance Commander NOS.

The course aims to equip delegates with the required knowledge, understanding and awareness of supporting agencies in order to perform the role of Operational Commander at an incident. The skills taught on this course can be utilized at any major incident.

• Role and responsibility of NHS Ambulance services at Major incidents
• National Ambulance Service Command and Control Guidance Document review
• Decision Making
• Threat and Radicalisation
• Log writing
• Legislation: How the adversarial and inquisitorial systems work, Procedures, order and roles in events, Correct recording, collation and presentation of supporting evidence

• The capabilities of HART
• Flood management
• Clinical aspects of CBRN
• Post incident Procedures
• Ambulance Command CPD

On completion of the course delegates will:

• Have a background understanding to CBRN
• Have a working knowledge of the Initial Operational Response (IOR)
• Have an understanding of ambulance response capabilities.
• Be able to demonstrate knowledge of command and control arrangements as per reference guidance.
• Have an understanding of partner agencies roles and responsibilities.
• Be able to demonstrate competency in decision making in response to major incident.
• Be aware of the importance of robust record keeping.
• Have experienced a mock court scenario aimed at preparing them for giving evidence at a public inquiry.

This course is open to anyone who is an Operational Commander in their current role, or those looking for development into this role.

This course is targeted at Ambulance staff that, as part of their daily duties, may be required to perform the role of Operational Commander at scene of a major or other incident or those looking to develop into this role.

This is not a refresher course.  Once this course has been completed it is your responsibility to maintain a portfolio to show Continued Professional Development (CPD).
